I believe the purpose of education is to assist the student in building a strong foundation of knowledge. This foundation will give them the base to continue to build upon for successes in all areas of life. Ray Wilbur said, “The potential possibilities of a child are the most intriguing and stimulating in all creation”; this potential gives a teacher the opportunity to help stimulate a child to value life-long learning. Education is also a way to extend the thinking of a child and to stretch them beyond where they think they can go.

My role as a teacher is to provide my students with a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere where they can grow not only intellectually, but socially as well. As a teacher, I must provide an environment in my classroom that allows a student to feel safe, and which supports and invites the sharing of thoughts and ideas. I believe that all children can learn. My role as a teacher is to value the possibilities of a child and to use a variety of styles and strategies within my classroom to enhance the learning of each student.

The role of the student within my classroom will be to understand, to value, and to respect themselves and others. Taking risks is part of learning. The need for respect in the classroom, from the teacher and the students, is an important part of the learning environment. Students should learn that education is not only the learning of facts, but also the learning of how to use the mind.

As a teacher, my role in the community is to be aware of and participate in various activities that promote and facilitate diverse learning opportunities. Diversity within community and in my classroom should be understood and embraced. Diversity enriches the learning process and is another way to add to the value of life-long learning for my students and myself.
